i migrated office 2016.  is there way soften brightness of color categories when printing outlook calendar?  it's little hard read against black font.  thanks!

in outlook client on pc, can change both default view or current view of calendar. detailed methods please check https://support.office.com/en-us/article/change-the-appearance-of-your-calendar-84efcbbb-52a5-4aab-9fbc-7e0f0520bb42 , specific screenshots below.

and if using outlook mac.

categorize item:

on organize tab, click categories.

if not seeing category like, need create new category.

modify existing categories or create new categories:

assign color each item within calendar :

1.select calendar bottom-left of outlook client.
2.create new event or modify existing event, using steps above.
3.click on categories.
4.select color category wish assign calendar event.

and in owa( outlook web app), can change right click specific calendar select color, choose 1 want.
