Grammar Check "have to" versus "must" - my concerns - Microsoft Community

hello,

i have concerns regarding microsoft word's grammar check. when creating document graduate english class, asked change statement “you have remember” suggested change, “you must remember.” not intended say. begin, “you have remember” idiomatic expression: acts familiar statement appropriate reading response, type of writing engaged in when prompted question. “must” remember implies type of imperative, carrying far more instructional connotation. stated oed, “must” “used show necessary or important happens in present or future.” while people remember comment making, hardly think important or necessary so. furthermore, not believe open-ended reading response necessitates such extreme command towards remembrance.

the larger matter @ stake regards global issue regarding wisdom , suitability of suggesting such change part of grammar check’s programming. in many contexts, “have to” far more appropriate, , frankly, accurate representation of person’s thinking. example, might say, “i have walk dog @ 6 every morning.” carries idiomatic, recognizable format. states walking dog necessary, albeit perhaps inconvenient part of routine. “i must walk dog @ 6 every morning” seems imply type of forced task should completed thanklessly or critical mission shall completed command.

i respectfully ask reconsider use of grammar check. indeed, not believe suggested change “have to” “must” or “should” represents helpful or essential service writers. rather, seeks rob writers of intention , meaning in misguided attempt vouchsafe type of elegance, clarity, or style initial writer not possess or intend.

cordially,

aw

hi wiznitzer,

honestly, agree understanding of these 2 words.
question when type "you have remember" in word, grammar checker doesn't suggest changing "you must", here screenshot, can see "have to" not underlined while grammar error "you doing" is.

can please provide word client version (click "file" > "account")?

meanwhile, can follow these steps , check result: go "file" > "options" > "proofing" > "when correcting spelling , grammar in word", next "writing style", choose "grammar", click "settings" > "reset all".

regards,
james
