Restore a Windows OS 10 Word 7 file of overwritten and saved file - Microsoft Community

may impossible task, in effort open space on hard drive taking files similar folders located under folders of different name , combining them under 1 main folder. every file, overwriting not problem same exact files. however, had 1 word file continuously wrote not being updated in other locations. why, not know. anyway, have last october, have written daily file. that's 9 months of data. when adding new information file few days ago, did not realize writing older version , saved. 5 or 6 days ago. i've not written word @ all, have not turned off computer, , had windows update little on week ago thought use restore point, doesn't show up. have ideas? i've searched through microsoft community , emailed proprietary restore products, products not restore overwritten , saved file.

the advice you've gotten correct -- way recover overwritten file have copy of somewhere else backup.

other manually created backup such 1 have october, there 2 possible ways have backup file weren't aware of. both of them depend on having mechanism set before overwriting occurred. if neither of them turned on when last saved file, there no going back.

  • in word 2007, go word options > advanced, scroll down save section, , @ setting "always create backup copy". if box checked, there should file in same folder document, named "backup of <document name>.wbk". file existed prior last save. if there such file, can rename "recovery of <document name>.docx" , open in word.
  • in windows 10, file history feature can selected folders @ regular intervals, give multiple versions of document recover. feature isn't turned on default, , require external drive (possibly usb drive or network share) or second drive inside computer. see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17143/windows-10-back-up-your-files for setup instructions.
