document contains number of figures , tables. create list each insert table of contents , select captions option. but. since both figures , tables have captions, lists come combined. way separate them out?

don't insert ordinary table of contents , choose caption style, because there's no way -- you've noticed -- make kind of toc distinguish different types of captions.

instead, click insert table of figures button in captions group:

(it should "insert table of figures or table of contents", there isn't enough space on ribbon that.) in dialog, choose kind of caption want table list:

choose "figure" 1 of tables , "table" other one, , lists separate.
