When will Outlook 2016 support gMail (properly)? - Microsoft Community

two problems in outlook 2016:

1) poor handling of personal gmail account

2) can't connect business gmail account.

i'm office 365 subscriber. 

1) personal gmail account. 

firstly, had downgrade gmail's security allow outlook connect. why? 

- outlook ios connects without doing that.

- ios mail client connects without doing that. 

secondly, performance bad. every time outlook 2016 syncs gmail account takes long time sync. creates problem because next sync wants start before sync finishes. granted long email history pretty big, but:

- outlook ios doesn't have problem

- ios mail client doesn't have problem.

there work-around found improve performance disabling imap folders in gmail, including "all mail". nice try! without "all mail", outlook ios doesn't work. tried talking outlook ios folks because have better support , feedback interface right there in app. is outlook 2016 problem , talk them. seems outlook ios , outlook 2016 folks don't talk @ all, despite same branding.  

even when use outlook 2016 access gmail account, email. 

- outlook ios sees google calendars , contacts

- ios calendars , contacts connect fine. 

2) business gmal account (for volunteer organisation)

outlook 2016 can't talk business gmail account without downgrading security. sure, tried again today. outlook 2016 date.

i'm not administrator , can't change security on gmail, if wanted to. guess what:

- outlook ios connects perfectly

- ios mail client connects perfectly.   

 

why using gmail?

well, business account don't have choice.

for family's personal accounts, used use outlook.com accounts, until microsoft did awful migration last year , ruined our nicely working email environment. 

last year, abandoned outlook.com in , went gmail. not choice necessity.

this year i'm looking way abandon outlook 2016. outlook ios pretty nifty email client. windows guys learn lot customer support, , maybe how connect gmail properly, them.

i can't go detail outlook team working hard improve experience gmail accounts in outlook. part of problem gmail doing lot of things imap/smtp isn't according imap/smtp standards. have lot of web functionality doesn't translate on imap protocol. mobile clients lot via rest , google api bypass many of imap limitations.

1) can unsubscribe "all mail" folder in outlook. don't have disable via web interface.

also, send/receive interval set to? don't set shorter 5 minutes. when have multiple accounts configured, don't set lower 10 minutes. default 30 minutes.

2) enable two-step authentication , use app password in outlook , don't have downgrade security settings in gmail. see: outlook can’t connect gmail: password incorrect

what "ruined" outlook.com migration? outlook.com actual exchange account, sync experience better compared previous eas connection , has many benefits on imap based accounts. issues , limitations mentioned current gmail account not apply outlook.com accounts. i'm not trying convince change or anything, i'm curious reason was.
